Join the next ASB presentation on Thursday, 27th November 2025 at MaP School, Maru a Pula, Gaborone.
This will be an Astronomy presentation by the students of Legae Academy, and also an introduction to the Astronomy subject in the A/L Physics curriculum.
This presentation will be preceded at 6:15 PM by Harold Hester bringing us his unique perspective on the Night Skies of December and with a look at the Andromeda constellation and Hyades.
Title: How the Universe Revealed its Secrets
Abstract:
For centuries, humans have looked up to the skies not only for wonder but for answers. Explore how natural cosmic events, from the movement of planets and solar eclipses to supernova explosions and cosmic radiation, have allowed scientists to uncover the mysteries behind nature's laws. Through these revelations, we see that the universe itself has been our greatest teacher. Each discovery, not made by invention but by observation , shaped modern physics and our understanding of space, time, and existence. A journey through the moments when nature spoke and humanity learned to listen.
At the A Level, the syllabus extends to include standard candles, luminosity of stars, radiant flux intensity, measuring distances to galaxies, Wien’s displacement law, Stefan-Boltzmann law, determining stellar radii, emission and absorption spectra, calculation of galactic recession speeds, and further exploration of the expanding Universe and Big Bang theory.
